Busselton Jetty

One of the most distinctive constructions in Busselton is the famous Busselton Jetty. With the original jetty built of jarrah, it was first started in 1853 but remained uncompleted until 1865. The first jetty was 528 ft but drifting sands and shallowness of the bay resulted in the construction of an additional 430 ft jetty in 1875. Today the jetty is nearly 2 km long and remains one of the longest in the world. Used by fishermen and holidaymakers, the jetty provides a pleasant walk with the sea breezes offering relief on a hot summers day. "Australia's first underwater observatory" is now open for viewing. It is one of Western Australia's most popular eco-tourism icons and descends 8m below sea level. It has four viewing platforms and a lift down to the bottom level for visitors in wheelchairs.
You can choose to casually stroll to the end of the jetty (15 - 20 minutes walk), or catch the miniature train to view the Underwater Observatory. Tickets are for sale at the office at the beginning of the jetty or by phoning the Geographe Bay Tourism Association. Be sure to book during busy periods.
